The official language of Brazil is Portuguese. The country has two national official languages, as stated in the Constitution: Portuguese (Article 225) and African languages (Article 215). But, in practice, only Portuguese is used for documents in courts and local governments and by the federal government. In states where at least 50% of the population confesses one of the minority languages, then it can be used as an alternative to Portuguese, according to Article 216(III), not really implemented in practice so far though.

The Portuguese language is the official language in Brazil, but there are also more than 200 indigenous languages spoken here. It’s believed that around 1,000 languages were spoken across this country before Europeans arrived – and many have died out since but some survive.
